Master of Research (MRes) in the UK
A UK Master of Research can help you develop a research question, practise methods and complete a substantial project. We help international applicants choose a course that fits their subject, previous study and longer-term PhD plans.
MRes, MPhil or an integrated doctorate?
Read the course structure before choosing by title. UCL describes its MRes as a modular degree with a large research component and training in research methods. Its MPhil is a distinct research qualification that may stand alone or form an initial stage towards a PhD. These are UCL's definitions; each university sets its own programme rules.
An integrated MRes/PhD has its own entry and progression requirements. A standalone MRes offer should not be treated as a funded PhD offer. Decide whether you need research training first or are ready to apply directly for doctoral opportunities.

What to check before applying
- Check how much of the course is assessed through independent research and which methods modules are available.
- Confirm whether a supervisor, proposal or research statement is required at application stage.
- Match your degree and grades to the course's published overseas qualification requirements; check the English-language evidence it accepts.
- Record the course deadline and any separate scholarship deadline, including when references must arrive.
Check the funding package for your exact course
Ask whether the award is open to international students and covers the tuition fee you would actually pay. Record living support, the funded period and any costs left outside the award. An advertised fee reduction alone does not establish full funding.
Our core focus is fully funded research. We assess the available funding alongside academic fit and explain any gap before you decide to proceed.
How PhD Success Academy supports your application
We review your academic record and research interests, narrow the programme shortlist, and check the required supervision and funding steps. We then help you prepare an academic CV, research statement or proposal, and the documents requested by your chosen university.
Use our academic CV guide and research proposal guide to prepare. If your profile is ready for doctoral study, explore fully funded PhD options in the UK. You can also compare research-study destinations or read our application support process.
Questions about research study in the UK
Does completing an MRes guarantee a PhD place?
No. Check the next programme's entry, progression and funding conditions. Research experience can support an application, but admission and funding require their own decisions.
Should I send a full proposal to every MRes course?
Follow the course instructions. Some ask for a proposal; others request a statement or allocate projects later. We prepare the document the chosen programme actually requires.
Programme and funding guidance checked on 9 September 2026. Confirm current requirements on the official university pages before applying.
