A Master by Research or MPhil in Australia can provide a focused period of supervised research. We assess the programme and scholarship together, starting with your previous research experience and the area you want to investigate.
Check the graduate research route
The University of Melbourne's MPhil in Science is one example of a research master's route. Its published course information sets out a two-year full-time duration and links admission, course structure and scholarship guidance. Other universities and disciplines may use different names and structures.
When comparing programmes, look at the thesis requirement, the research experience expected at entry and how a supervisor is selected. If your previous degree included a dissertation, retain its title, grade and research component so the university can assess it accurately.
