What does a fully funded PhD in Australia mean?
Funding may come through the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP), university graduate research scholarships, faculty awards, supervisor research grants, external sponsors, or advertised projects. An award may provide a fees offset, stipend, allowances, or a combination, but coverage and conditions differ. RTP funding is administered by eligible universities, so applicants apply through individual institutions rather than directly to the government.

Australia RTP scholarships: stipend, tuition and duration
A tuition scholarship alone does not provide a living allowance. Ask for a written breakdown of the funding offered before accepting your PhD place.
Published RTP stipend rates for 2026 and 2027
The Australian Government lists the full-time RTP annual stipend range as AUD $34,315–$53,608 for 2026 and AUD $35,550–$55,537 for 2027. These are the base and maximum RTP rates, not a promise that every successful applicant receives the maximum. Check the university’s actual award amount and annual adjustment policy.
Full-time research doctorate RTP support normally spans three to four years, with the exact period determined by the university. Compare the end dates for your stipend and tuition support separately.

Six questions to ask before accepting
- Tuition: Does the award cover your full international PhD tuition, and for how long?
- Living allowance: What annual amount will you receive, when do payments start, and how frequently are they paid?
- Health cover and relocation: Which allowances are included, and does any health cover include accompanying family members?
- Funding end dates: When does each component finish, and what happens if your thesis takes longer?
- Application steps: Are admission, supervisor approval and scholarship consideration separate processes, with separate deadlines?
- Conditions: What progress, enrolment, leave and outside-work conditions apply to your specific award?
Admission eligibility and scholarship selection are different
RTP can support international research students, but awards are competitive and universities set their own selection processes. There is no single RTP-wide IELTS score or first-class honours requirement: check the institution’s admission and scholarship rules. The university administers applications; you do not apply directly to the Australian Government.
