Research Master's in Europe: Programmes and Scholarships
Europe offers research-focused master's programmes under different national and university systems. We begin with your subject and target country, then compare the curriculum, thesis opportunities and funding for the exact programme.
Compare the curriculum, not just the degree name
A useful example is Utrecht University's Computing Science research master's in the Netherlands: its published curriculum combines a course component with a substantial research project and thesis. This illustrates one programme structure, not a rule for every European master's.
For your own shortlist, record the awarding university, teaching language, research credits and thesis arrangements. If a programme involves more than one university, check where each study period takes place and which institution manages admission and funding.

What to check before applying
- Choose the country and subject first, then confirm that the programme offers meaningful research in your area.
- Check language requirements for the degree and for any research involving local organisations or participants.
- Match your prior qualification and subject credits to the programme's entry requirements.
- Read the scholarship's nationality rules, eligible programme list and separate application dates.
Match the scholarship to the university and programme
There is no single Europe-wide application or funding rule for research master's study. Maastricht University's scholarship guidance, for example, requires applicants to check nationality and programme eligibility and to apply for a study programme before its scholarship process.
Check whether the award covers tuition, living costs and the full study period. A scholarship offered by one university does not fund a degree at another unless the published scheme explicitly provides for that arrangement.

Questions about research study in Europe
Are all European MSc and MA programmes research master's degrees?
Compare the actual research and thesis requirements. The degree initials alone do not tell you how much independent research is included or whether the course fits your PhD plans.
Does a university scholarship cover every programme?
Check its eligible programme list and applicant conditions. Some awards are restricted to particular courses, faculties or nationalities.
