Europe has no single PhD funding package or application deadline. Compare the specific vacancy, host institution and country before deciding whether an offer meets your research and living-cost needs.
Employment contracts and stipends
Germany’s official research information portal distinguishes paid research jobs from scholarship stipends. An employment contract hires you through a university, institute or company; a stipend is a grant and is not itself an employment contract. Structured doctoral programmes may use either model. Ask the host to explain insurance arrangements and the amount you would actually receive.

How to find MSCA Doctoral Network vacancies
Individual PhD applicants apply to advertised positions within funded networks. The European Commission directs researchers to EURAXESS, where vacancies identify the recruiting institution, project and application process. A consortium funding-call deadline is not the same as a student’s vacancy deadline.
Doctoral Network candidates can be of any nationality and must not already hold a doctoral degree when recruited. A mobility condition generally limits prior residence or main activity in the recruiting country to no more than 12 months during the preceding 36 months. Check the exact vacancy and applicable rules before applying.

Six checks for a European PhD offer
- Funding status: Is this an employment contract, scholarship or admission offer requiring separate funding?
- Usable income: Is the advertised figure gross or net, and what deductions or insurance costs apply?
- Contract percentage: Does the quoted pay correspond to the actual appointment percentage and working hours?
- Full costs: Who covers tuition, registration, research expenses and required travel?
- Duration and duties: How long is funding guaranteed, what teaching or project work is required, and what happens if the thesis takes longer?
- Eligibility and deadline: Do your qualifications, research background and mobility history meet this vacancy’s criteria?
For a project-defined position, demonstrate how your methods and experience fit the advertised research. Submit a new proposal only when requested. For applicant-led projects, prepare a research plan aligned with the proposed supervisor.
