What does a fully funded PhD in New Zealand mean?

New Zealand PhD funding: domestic fees are not a scholarship
Paying a lower tuition rate does not mean your PhD is fully funded. Check your admission offer and scholarship award separately: who pays the tuition, what living support is included, and how long does each last?
University of Auckland: a 2026 scholarship example
Auckland publishes a NZ$35,468 annual stipend for 2026, adjusted annually for CPI, with tuition support for up to 42 months of full-time equivalent study and single-student health insurance where applicable. Duration depends on the doctoral programme and award terms. This is an Auckland award example, not a funding rate shared by every New Zealand university.
The scheme has four competitive rounds each year. Applicants indicate scholarship interest in their doctoral admission application rather than submitting a separate scholarship application. Auckland advises applicants to wait for the scholarship outcome before enrolling. Check the published round dates and your award’s enrolment deadline.

Understand the domestic-fee policy
Auckland lists PhD tuition of NZ$8,847.60 per year for 2026 for eligible international PhD students, plus a separate Student Services Fee. Eligibility for the domestic PhD rate requires residence in New Zealand during the programme; its published policy permits research activities overseas for a cumulative maximum of 12 months. Confirm your fee status directly, especially if planning extended overseas research. A reduced fee does not itself cover tuition or living expenses.
